If you're heading up to Islington, the pubs at the Angel end are more towny (Walkabout, Pitcher and Piano and the like) while the Highbury corner end has a few more quirky pubs. Can definitely recommend the Buffalo Bar just outside Highbury tube (underneath the unfortunately named Famous Cock) which has live indie/artrock music on a few nights a week, you can get listings from their website. The Union Chapel slightly further down the road also has some good comedy nights if you 're also up for that (and is an amazing, but mostly unheated, building!) The Islington Academy down near Angel has two good club nights on a Saturday for something a bit different, Feeling Gloomy (in a tongue in cheek way - indie, punk and bit of electronica) and Club de Fromage downstairs! Best music venue IMHO is the Windmill in Brixton - cheap, tiny, and slightly grubby, but since I live round there I'm biased, and it's a bit far from Bayswater!
